Monkey Run # 8 24th August 2007 Run Report by: Festering Streaker
The run started at 1:15pm, still within the time frame provided for by the hares, but only just! We had the usual late people and two no shows delaying the bus for about 10 minutes. The first half of the run was perfectly timed at 1hr and well papered. Thoughtfully the hares had put in some nice forest to keep us shaded. Also some shiggy to cool our feet and then some fresh to wash the shiggy off. Clever checks and the pack was well together to the water stop. Bananas and Kit Kats, sprite, coke, electrolyte and of course water laid out for the runners. Half way into our yak yak water stop, the farmer turns up wanting to drive into his field, so we all work a sweat moving camp some 2 meters or so. 2:30pm and the hares set us off on the second half saying we should be 1hr 5 or 10 minutes. This turned out to be a little off the mark! Good trails until we hit the famous earth works surrounded by electric fence! We spent some 30 minutes looking around in the mud and dodging heavy machinery. We poked into all corners of this fenced off earth works looking for a way out and some paper. Bottomless Pitt and I concluded it must have been a back check or FT buried now by the diggers so we went back. It transpired many beers later that the hares had failed to find a way through as we did and believed they had picked up all their paper on re-tracing their steps. They had failed to pick up one or two strands which by now had become the signature tune of the paper work in the second half. Enough said about the quarry! Were off again on some fantastic tracks that kept giving teasing glimpses of lakes and reservoirs. We even ran past a mini island with 3 baby billy goats that had their own little blue plastic goat boat. Hallucination, de-hydration, or too much Pinkl Floyd? I had to check in the circle later that I was not the only one to see the goats in their goat boat. A little harder to follow paper now, as the hares are obviously running low and have taken to cutting the paper into half single strands. Finally at 4:30pm were back at a great lake side C-site fitting with the beach patrol theme of the day. Boy did I need to chill out in the lake with a cold one! Overall when all had taken their chill pills, we forgave the hares for the second half and later voted good run. We won’t however forget the quarry for a while. Well done hares for a great day On On GM Festering Streaker
